There are a number of migraine triggers that can pop up during the Valentine’s Day festivities. Understanding these triggers and being proactive can help you manage your symptoms effectively.

STRONG SCENTS FROM FLOWERS AND CANDLES

Nothing says “romantic” like a bouquet of roses or scented candles, but for migraine sufferers, these can be a real challenge. The strong floral scents from roses, lilies, or jasmine can trigger a headache or worsen an existing one. Similarly, candles with heavy fragrances like vanilla, cinnamon, or musk might be too much for your sensitive nose. If you're getting flowers, opt for a non-scented bouquet or consider artificial flowers that look beautiful but won’t trigger your migraines. For candles, go for unscented or lightly-scented varieties.

Pro Tip: Soy candles or essential oil diffusers with calming scents like lavender or eucalyptus might be gentler options and migraine prevention. You can also ask your Significant other or the Gals to limit the use of cologne or perfume.

LIGHTING

Bright Lights and Flickering. Lighting plays a big role in creating the right mood—but for those who suffer from migraines, harsh or flickering lights can quickly turn a romantic evening into a headache-inducing experience. Bright overhead lights can be overwhelming for sensitive eyes, instead opt for soft, ambient light to set a calm and comfortable atmosphere. At home, use table lamps with warm, dimmable bulbs, or fairy lights to add a cozy, glowing touch. These types of lighting create a gentle, soothing environment that’s easy on the eyes.

Pro Tip: If you're dining out, consider asking for a table by a window with natural light or request a spot away from bright, overhead lighting.

STRESS

Valentine’s Day can sometimes feel like a high-pressure occasion, whether it’s choosing the perfect gift, planning the perfect date, or worrying about expectations. Stress can be a major migraine trigger, especially if you’re already prone to tension headaches. Combat it by taking a few moments throughout the day to pause, breathe deeply, and reconnect with yourself. Try doing some simple neck and shoulder stretches to release tension, or even step outside for a short walk to clear your mind. The more you can stay present and relaxed, the more you’ll enjoy the day.

Pro Tip: Try going on the offense and wear a Migraine Ice Cap as migraine prevention or apply it to the back of your neck to provide soft soothing relief. Cold therapy helps reduce inflammation and constrict blood vessels, which can ease pain and bring comfort during a headache. Keep one in your freezer and you will have instant access to relief whenever you need it.

OVERINDULGANCE

Valentine’s Day often comes with indulgent meals, rich chocolates, and celebratory drinks, but for many migraine sufferers, these foods and beverages can trigger or worsen headaches. Stay mindful of your food and drink choices by opting for migraine-friendly alternatives. When it comes to chocolate, choose dark chocolate with less sugar, which is typically less likely to cause a headache than milk chocolate or highly processed varieties. If you plan to have wine or cocktails, try to keep it moderate and check out our guide to Holiday cheer for helpful tips on picking an alcoholic drink that won’t trigger a migraine!

Pro Tip: Stay Hydrated! Drinking plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body feeling balanced and to avoid a migraine or dehydration headache.
